STOP PRESS

2.23 pm on the 30th April I have received 24 emails (some from very shy individuals) committing to this Word War.....

3.36 - another 3...making 27 now and I have posted details on Feath's Forum.. Bruce is getting secondary cancer from the cigarette smoke necessary to create an atmosphere around my desk....

4.07 2 more...grand total 29 and I have got to get back to my computer otherwise I won't stand a chance... I have just been on Feath's site and the prompt today was "Live once die Twice" - this fits in beautifully with my storyline...hold everything... Josh has just shounted from his bedroom that he can't get on line, but is in it anyway as long as he doesn't have to use the prompt.... anything now goes at this juncture...30.....

4.13 Posting another bulletin on My Space cuz I can't keep up with this, and another entrant declared by text... we now stand at 31 combatants.

4.15 answering the last emails that I can on this at the moment, and 3 more declared. This begs the question how many people still aren't signed up as Members !! (slapped wrists). So that makes 34.

I am off in a little while to visit my son, but will taking my laptop with me and writing. I will post a newsflash when I get home this evening, so keep entering. I am going to have to think what I can offer as a prize - but I don't think my skills are up to sorting out an avatar - still will work on that in my mind, along with the plotlines.

12.20 log back on to see the mess I have created having increased my wordcount by all of 50 words. My daughter in law had a puncture, I spent an evening reading to Toby from a self-published childrens book which is brill (more details to follow on the Reading in the Margins Site). Realised that dialogue doesn't have to neatly trip of my character's tongues, and I know know where I am going with my script... what a revelation.

4 more emails from new participants - this now makes 38 and somebody wants to know if we are issuing medals - nope just pats on the backs, but working on a more substantial reward.

1st May

11.26 Seriously drawn into procrastination - masses to do and emails still arriving - no it is not too late to join.... Decision to switch computer off to avoid further delaying tactics - Hobgoblins is a brill site though...

http://www.hobgoblin.net/ I have come to the decision, reluctantly, that these forums are an addiction. Need a bath - will be back soon... 2 more - so we are now at 40 (but one person has stopped at 1,000 - well done scenterwriter, and I quite understand that your children need to see you)

1.12 pm - Sat in bath working out quite what to do about no Avator/Icon - then it came to me in a flash of inspiration - downloaded free programme and got stuck in - thought I would use the moon as we are all aiming for the moon, and that seemed a suitable symbol. Feel free to download the Participant one, and working on a 5K winner one...

1.56 pm - 4 emails from people who have to stop otherwise divorce and other dire consequences will ensue... please pat yourselves on the back - and award yourself the Word War Winner's Icon... I now have to go and do some work, because I am SERIOUSLY BEHIND....

10.59 pm - I have done some serious writing this afternoon, and got the story moving in a very purposeful direction. Then I was interrupted midflow by a not very pleasant blog comment. On further checking I found it wasn't a local person, but some party activist who obviously had nothing better to do on a Monday Bank Holiday. Now being of Irish extraction there is nothing I enjoy better than a good crac, and if I have had a glass of wine (or two) all the better. So I got stuck into my response, and feel so much better now. It hasn't sorted my story, but I am going to add Mr/Mrs/Ms or whatever as a character.. it has made my night and better than any prompt - I do declare !!

My Word count has reach 5326 so I am sticking with this....

11.02 starting to check the emails, and realise there are two many to cope with - so see you tomorrow with your final counts... This has been truly amazing...

11.33 - Sorted out the Winners Icons so there is a 1K and 5K, as well as the 10K... a sort of quarter, half and full marathon I suppose. Note to myself - must sort out the terminology by next Bank Holiday....

So it is still not too late, just email mail@writinginthemargins.co.uk

to let us know you are declaring participation and then email again

with your word count and the title of your piece after 12pm on the 1st/2nd May.

All words are good words - so everybody joining is entitled to this winners icon...

The Writing in the Margins Inaugural May Day Challenge - 10K

Just to let everyone know who has joined our challenge (on the back of the highly successful Feath's April Fool Challenge) - we are extending ours to include the May Day Bank Holiday.

To refresh: You write up to 10,000 words in a short story form (or scene from a play - or multiple poems) - here was the original prompt.

"The Deeds were silent as to the ownership"

or you could discuss the resolution of a problem.

It isn't too late to join now, and obviously all words are better than no words, so don't worry if you don't make the word count.

The only real rule is you have to have fun writing it, and recapture any of the lost enjoyment from the early days before pre-publication and deadlines....

Best wishes everyone.
